West Ham v QPR....Game observations
We defended from the front, Sakho and Valencia worked unbelievably hard from the top. The movement and understanding was top class. We have a pair of players up top that have the ability and work ethic to be an asset in any premier league team.

The back 4 were really tight and made all the right decisions. Cresswell is a real talent and is arguably one of our best young LB's in a while. The 2 CB's were solid and played really well together and were tight when they needed to be and dropped off when it was needed. Jenkinson is a better defender than attacker that is for sure his positioning is very good although he seems somewhat uncomfortable on the ball at times but a real asset to our defence.

The midfield were everywhere, absolutely class. Downing as usual this season the best of the bunch. He has been great for us this season and was a constant thorn in QPR's side. Song was tidy by a bit leggy and Morgan worked hard.

Overall we were light years ahead of this QPR team and look like we have the fight and skill to be a real threat to any team this season.

MOTM

Valencia

He didn't stop all game and is a real asset to the team

agree that valencia gives 100% but not so sure on MOM. I would say that I thought Sakho, Song or Cresswell were my MOM

'Midfield was class'

No better or worst than the last few games.

Surely Sakho was MoM , he never stopped running , never gave the QPR defence a seconds peace

Fordy's thought process:

Noble playing?

No: we were like Barcelona at their best.
Yes: we were like Barnsley at their worst.

Whereas we we about as good as we needed to be to beat a very poor QPR

I have an agenda about the absent midfielder I am not mentioning

Agreed about the work-rate up front. Terrific.

What I find incredible is that we're playing this midfield diamond that would be in a lot of trouble against a 4-5-1 opponent with wide players pushed right up on our full-backs, yet nobody has played it against us!!! Premiership is weird this season - a lot of experimental hybrid systems being played. As if everyone's agreed to loosen up their formations.

I think Cresswell and Jenkinson look like ordinary half-decent youngish pros who should improve over time. Nothing more than that.

Credit to Amalfitano and Downing for playing hard-working midfield roles that I don't think really suit either. Downing has to play at the tip of the diamond for me, because we need him or somebody to carry the ball forward, rather than pinging those Gerrard-lite crossfield balls that flatter to deceive.

Zarate just doesn't do enough. His passing is excellent but not incisive in the slightest. Doesn't beat a player. Doesn't really hold up the ball. I think he has to play up front to get possession on the edge of the box where he can hurt opponents, but the trouble is that he won't work as hard as the other two to justify his place. Impact sub I think, a valuable role all the same.

To have Sakho hungry and in form is great, a real bonus. I don't think he quite does anything well enough to really be too excited - he's a decent pro doing a decent job in great form and with a good attitude and that's great. Valencia for me shouldn't be up front at all, I think he should be played out wide and asked to be positive, and that's almost the role he's playing as it is. As a pair they're a menace up front, and that's a good thing. But I think if the honeymoon period ends and they start phoning in the performances they'd look incredibly average.

Where we're good is that there are options in this year's squad. There's a squad of decent pros there who can fill in for each other and do a bunch of things generally right. There's not a single player that really excites me. But it's a great advert for being decent and well organised and hard-working. A definite step up on last season.

Downing played very well. Can't be bothered with rest.

Song MOTM for me

Outnumbered in that midfield yet never once did he look flustered, uses the ball incredibly well and was the catalyst for the second goal

Some people have a glass that's half full.

Others have a glass that's half empty.

Alex V hasn't even got a fucking glass.

Jenkinson passes the ball backwards very well.

Song doesn't pass the ball anywhere very well.

Sakho was MOM by a mile.

I was wondering about Song's shorts - he seems to like rolling them up, for some reason. Looks a bit weird.

Agree with most of that. Zarate is frustrating. Shows moments of class above the rest..then disappears. Doesn't work hard enough for the this league..good sub material by looks of things.

HairySpotter 8:44 Sun Oct 5
Re: West Ham v QPR....Game observations
Far be it from me to criticize but Zarate IMO is crap. He is a typical type of journeyman foreigner who has little moments of genius as they are so much more comfortable with the ball but no end product (goal at C Palace aside) and over the course of a season will contribute mostly fuck all.

Compare his work rate to Song, Sakho and Valencia.
